Located on Sydney Harbour, Woolloomooloo takes its name from a local Aboriginal word meaning 'kangaroo' or 'burial place'. Initially Woolloomooloo was used by the colony for grazing livestock and the construction of the Finger Wharf in the 1850s saw a suburb develop, with dockside workers taking up residences locally. With gentrification of the harbourside suburb beginning in the 1970s, the once industrial Finger Wharf was completely redeveloped in the 1990s and is now home to fine dining restaurants and bars.
