Westmead was first settled in the early 1800s as part of the original Government House grounds in Parramatta and takes its name from its location as a meadow west of the initial Parramatta settlement. Today Westmead is perhaps best known for its hospitals including Westmead Hospital which was established in the 1970s and is one of Sydney's largest teaching hospitals along with being the base for the NRMA CareFlight personnel.
