The first land grants in West Pennant Hills were made as early 1796 with farmers and timber cutters amongst the suburbs first settlers. Pennant Hills takes its name from a flagpole, or 'pennant', located on these hills west of Sydney in the first years of settlement which was used to signal to Government House in Parramatta that the Governor was returning from his retreats in outer Sydney.
