Originally the land of the Kamilaroi Aboriginal People, the New England town of Wallabadah takes its name from the cattle station set up by one of the area’s first residents in the 1830s. Although the commercial and service centre for surrounding districts in the 1850s, the railway line bypassed Wallabadah for nearby Quirindi in 1877 and the town went into a slow decline. Australia's first Country Horse Racing Club was established in Wallabadah in 1852 and the Wallabadah Cup which is held every New Year's Day has been a popular event in the town since 1898.
