To PlacesLocated on the inner east coast of Sydney, the suburb of Vaucluse was originally inhabited by the Dharug Aboriginal people. The suburb takes its name from historic Vaucluse House which was originally a small cottage built in the late 1790s by emancipated convict Sir Henry Browne Hayes. Following the purchase of the property in 1827 by William Charles Wentworth, the modest house would be transformed into a grand mansion with the surrounding land cultivated into manicured gardens.
