Located in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, the town of Tumut once marked the boundaries of three Aboriginal tribes; the Ngunawal, Walgalu and Wiradjuri and Tumut takes its name from a local Aboriginal word meaning 'resting place by the river'. Settled in the 1820s by cattle farmers and timber getters, the legacy of these first industries lives on today with the Visy Paper Mill - one of the largest paper mills in Australia - operating out of Tumut.
