Originally settled by fisherman, the seaside town of South West Rocks in the Macleay Valley was chosen as the site of a Gaol in 1877 and the Trial Bay Gaol opened in 1886, operating until 1915 when it held German Prisoners of War. Today South West Rocks is renowned for its excellent fishing spots and surf beach.
