The small village of Seaham on the Williams River on the New South Wales mid-north coast operated as a trading port until the railway line through nearby Paterson would essentially spell the end of the River trading routes. A major fire which swept through the town in 1939 would destroy much of Seaham’s heritage architecture including Porphyry, one of the districts grandest houses and home to Reverend Henry Carmichael who was instrumental in the implementation of a Public Education system in New South Wales.
