Originally inhabited by the Worimi Aboriginal people, settlement in Raymond Terrace began in the 1830s when the riverside village just inland from the coast became a trading port for the surrounding districts. One of the districts first vineyards was established using cuttings imported from Europe by local land owner James King in 1832. King would help found the Hunter River Vineyard Association and is recognised as one of the most influential viticulture pioneers in the Hunter region.
