The area in the north west of New South Wales that would become the town of Quirindi was originally inhabited by the Kamilaroi Aboriginal people and the town takes its name from a Kamilaroi word meaning 'nest of hills'. With settlement from graziers and agricultural farmers dating back to the 1820s, its location on the Liverpool Plains places Quirindi in the heart of the state's richest agricultural district.
