Traditionally the land of the Wiradjuri Aboriginal People, the discovery of gold in the nearby Fish River in 1823 saw a large mining community settle in Oberon. Known early on as Bullock Flat, Oberon was officially named in 1863 after Oberon the King of the Fairies in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
