Located on rocky terrain on Sydney's north shore, the isolated area that would become the suburb of Northbridge was only sparsely populated until the late 1800s. The construction of the suspension bridge crossing Long Gully in 1892 would give the area its name. With the extension of a tramline through the area in the 1920s, Northbridge became popular for residential development.
