The city of Newcastle was founded in 1804 by the 21-year-old Lieutenant Charles Menzies as the site for a convict punishment centre, intended to house the more rebellious convicts from the Castle Hill uprising in Sydney. As a working port city, Newcastle's trade history has always centred around the coal and steel industries before the closure of the BHP steelworks in 1999 saw the town’s biggest industry leave the town.
