The land that would become the town of Narrandera was originally inhabited by the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people and it is thought the town derives its name from the Wiardjuri word 'nharrang' maeaning 'frill-necked lizard'. Explorer Captain Charles Sturt would pass through the area in 1829 and settlement by graziers and agricultural farmers followed with the area proclaimed a town in 1885.
