Originally inhabited by the Wanaruah Aboriginal people, Murrurundi in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales takes its name from the word "Murrumdoorandi" which was the name given to the area by the Wanaruah. Comprising of several large estates owned by a few families, the township of Murrurundi was laid out in 1840 and the larger land subdivided allowing for residential development in the area.
