Located on the border of New South Wales and Victoria, Mulwala takes its name from a local Aboriginal word meaning Big Lagoon. The town's distinctive Mulwala Lake was formed in the 1930s when the Murray River was dammed as part of the Murray-Darling Irrigation Scheme.
