The south western Sydney suburb of Minto was an early area subdivided into land grants, the first of which were made to prominent free settlers by the NSW Corp in the period between their deposing of Governor Bligh and the arrival of Lachlan Macquarie to take over as Governor in 1809. Named after the then Viceroy of India and Earl of Minto, Gilbert Elliot Murray Kyngmount, it is said that officers of the NSW Corps named the suburb in his honour to gain favour with senior authorities before being sent back to England facing a court martial over allegations of corruption. Prominent emancipated convict surgeon William Redfern had a large land grant made to him by Governor Macquarie in 1818 which covered much of what is now the modern day suburb of Minto.
