This suburb on the banks of the Parramatta River was originally the land of the Dharug Aboriginal people. Originally part of a number of land grants given to prominent Sydney residents, the extension of a railway line through the suburb in the 1880s saw the land subdivided for residential development. Meadowbank takes its name from the 'Meadow Bank' house of one of the district’s first land owners.
