To PlacesThe town of Maclean in the Clarence Valley on the north coast of New South Wales was first settled by cedar cutters in the 1830s which followed Matthew Filnders discovering the mouth of the Clarence River in 1789. The town takes its name from Alexander Grant MacLean who was the New South Wales surveyor general when the town was proclaimed in the 1860s. The town attracted a large number of Scottish settlers and the Maclean Highland Gathering held every year in Easter celebrates the town's Scottish heritage.
