This suburb in Sydney's inner-west was named after the Lewisham Estate of local land owner Joshua Frey Josephson, who in turn took the name from the English borough of Lewisham. When Sydney's first railway line was extended west of the city in 1855, it terminated at Lewisham and the distinctive whipple truss railway bridge built over Long Cove Creek is now recognised as one of the most significant pieces of engineering history in New South Wales.
