The coal mining town of Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley was founded in the early 1900s following the announcement by government geological surveyor Sir Edgeworth David in 1886 that the richest coalfields in the southern hemisphere were found in the area north of the existing Newcastle collieries. Although the coal mines of Kurri Kurri ceased operation in the 1960s, the town’s aluminium smelter remains the towns primary employer today.
