The south eastern Sydney suburb of Jannali was originally inhabited by the Dharawal Aboriginal people and takes its name from a word in their language meaning 'moon'. Although settlement in the Jannali dates back to the early 1800s, the isolation of the area meant development was slow until the extension of a railway line through the suburb in 1931.
