Originally the land of the Pajong Aboriginal People, Gunning was first settled in the 1820s and marked the southern limit of the colony. With the explorations of William Hovell and Hamilton Hume south past Gunning in the late 1820s, this sheep farming community would become a popular stopover for people travelling between Melbourne and Sydney, and when the Hume Highway's initial route was established it would run through the town until being diverted south in 1993.
