Located on the Parramatta River just west of Sydney, Gladesville was originally known as Doodys Point after convict artist John Doody who was granted land in the area in 1795. Gladesville was the site of the state's first purpose built mental hospital which began admitting patients transferred from various other Hospitals around the state in 1837. Designed by architect Mortimer Lewis, the ruins of the remains of the Mental Hospital buildings can be found at Bedlam Point today.
