Located in the mid-north plains of New South Wales, Gilgandra takes its name from a local Aboriginal word meaning 'long water hole', in reference to the town’s permanent water hole which is located in the Castlereagh River. In 1915, 26 local men who had enlisted as soldiers in World War I began what is now known as the 'Cooee March', travelling through country New South Wales recruiting soldiers. By the time they reached Sydney a month later, they had successfully recruited 263 men for the war effort.
