The riverside town of Dunedoo on the central-northern plains of New South Wales takes its name from a Wiradjuri Aboriginal word meaning 'black swan' as the birds were once common to the nearby Talbragar River. Once a flourishing rural centre, Dunedoo has suffered in the latter half of the 20th century with the loss of passenger trains through its railway line and its residents moving to the nearby commercial centres of Mudgee and Dubbo. Pronounced 'dunny-doo', Dunedoo recently considered building a 'Big Dunny' to attract tourist to the town, yet the plans were eventually rejected and the 'Big Dunny' was never built.
