Originally known as Keltie Bay after James Keltie, the master of HMS Sirius, Double Bay would eventually be renamed after its distinctive twin bays in 1821. Despite being gazetted for the site of a Botanical Gardens by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in the 1820s, under subsequent Governor Ralph Darling the land would instead by subdivided and sold for residential development in the 1830s.
