Located on the Murray River, the town of Dareton was originally developed as part of the War Services Land Settlement Scheme which gave farmers farming land following their return from the war. The town is at the centre of the Coomealla Irrigation area which was developed in the 1920s and the town takes its name from Water Conservation and Irrigation Commissioner at the time, Henry Harvey Dare. Dareton and its surrounding irrigation districts produce some of the best quality produce in New South Wales.
