This fertile land on the south coast of New South Wales was originally part of a number of land grants given to prominent members of the colony in the early 1800s, and despite some early experiments with farming agricultural crops, the land found success through the dairy industry. The advent of the railway and the smelting works which followed in the 1880s would transform the town into a thriving village until the Smelting Company of Australia Ltd's relocation to Port Kembla in 1905. Today dairying remains the primary local industry.
