Settlement in Crows Nest on Sydney's lower North Shore dates back to 1819 when the first land grants were made, including one to prominent Sydney merchant Edward Wollstonecraft whose large estate covered much of what is now Crows Nest and neighbouring Wollstonecraft. He named his farm 'Crows Nest Farm' and the suburb which would emerge from his property in the years to come would retain this name. The original grand gates of his Crows Nest House now stand as the front gates to North Sydney Demonstration School on the Pacific Highway.
