Before settlement by agricultural farmers in the early 1800s, the Ngemba and Wongaibon Aboriginal people were the traditional caretakers of the land alongside the Darling River that would become the town of Cobar. The discovery of copper ore in the 'Kubbur' water-hole just outside of the town in 1870 by Charles Campbell, Thomas Hartman and George Gibb saw a copper mine established and forever changed the working profile of the town. Mining still accounts for the primary industry of Cobar and today silver, lead, zinc and gold mines compliment the long established copper mines.
