Located on the New South Wales South coast, the hillside community of Coalcliff was established in the 1830s by cattle farmers. The town would take its name from the areas significant coal deposits discovered in the 1850s when mines were established and the population of the town was swelled by miners and their families. The Illawarra Coke Company continues to operate from Coalcliff today and is one of the key producers of coke in New South Wales.
