Settlers came to this area on Sydney's upper North Shore as early as 1794 to take up a lease for salt extraction on nearby Dangar Island, yet it would not be until the 1880s that Brooklyn would emerge as a town centre. Located on the banks of the Hawkesbury river mouth, Brooklyn supported a large community of oyster farmers and fisherman whilst the substantial forested areas also attracted timber getters.
