Located in the plains near the Queensland border, Brewarrina was once a meeting place for several different Aboriginal language groups. There is some confusion as to how Brewarrina was named, yet it is widely believed that it is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'fishing place'. The Brewarrina native fishing grounds which are built into the Darling Riverbed are approximately 40 000 years old and the excellent fishing spots found along the river continue to attract visitors to the town today.
