A village about 10 km NE of Phifer Well and about 17 km E by N of Hallam TS. Boundaries within the Inverell Council area shown on map GNB3654.

Originally the name of a squatting run in the pastoral district of New England, held in 1848 by W.C. Hetherington. It was presumed to be named after Bonshaw Tower, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. (Place Names of Northern NSW, Atchison, 1976).
