When settlers first came to Bargo in the 1800s, they would be the first to record sightings of the Koala, Lyre Bird and Wombat. Mistaking their sighting of a Lyre Bird as a Pheasant the area north of Bargo would be named Pheasants Nest. Bargo takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning 'cripple' or 'thick scrub' and the local Wirrimbirra Sanctuary and Dingo Sanctuary aim to preserve the land and its wildlife as it originally was.
