As the site first visited by Governor Arthur Phillip when he crossed Sydney harbour in 1788, the suburb of Balgowlah on Sydney's lower north shore was first known as Manly. With Manly soon referring to the area it does today on the eastern side of the peninsula, Balgowlah would take its name from an Aboriginal word meaning 'north harbour'.
