William McMahon became Prime Minister at the age of 63, making him one of the oldest Prime Ministers to gain election success. He led the Liberal Party in Australia through a turbulant period in history, leading the then Government in the accelerated withdrawal of Australian troops from Vietnam. He lost office to Gough Whitlam in 1972.
