William Dobell
To CultureWilliam Dobell is one of Australia's foremost genre painters. Born in the Newcastle suburb of Cooks Hill in 1899, he won the Society of Artists' travelling scholarship in 1929 which would take him to London and open up the world of art to him. Knighted in 1966, today his contribution to art in Australia is recognised with the Sir William Dobell Prize for Drawing, which is exhibited alongside the Archibald Prize, a prize which he won in 1943.
