The Dicksonia Antarctica, or Soft Tree Fern, prefers the cooler regions of New South Wales - common to gullies and creeks areas of mountain ranges. It is one of several native plants found in New South Wales which were staple foods for the local Aboriginal people. The top of the trunk can be roasted, or eaten raw, and despite their well known toxicity the young fronds can be eaten after the toxins are removed by cooking.
