The numbat is one of a number of species of native mammal presumed extinct in New South Wales. Although there are still thought to be remaining colonies in the Eucalypt forests of Western Australia, it is thought that feral cats and foxes have played a large part in the once widespread numbat population in NSW. Easily identifiable by the black and white horizontal stripes on its back, the numbat lived in burrows and fed on termites.
