Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin was one of Australia's most celebrated literary figures. Publishing her writing under the sexually ambiguous Miles Franklin, her debut novel My Brilliant Career (1901) was the defining work of her career. Variously employed as a journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald and Daily Telegraph, she often employed masculine pseudonyms and was heavily involved in early women's rights movements in Australia. Upon her death her estate was used to establish the Miles Franklin Literary Award.
