Max Dupain, Photographer

To Culture
© Max Dupain, National Library of Australia

Max Dupain has been immortalised in the Australian consciousness by his iconic picture 'Sunbaker' taken on Culburra Beach on the New South Wales South Coast in 1937. However, his photographic work and influence stretches far beyond his photographs documenting Australian beach culture. He preferred to work only with black and white film and his preference for depicting reality and ordinary things in an obtuse and yet unaffected way coloured his distinct approach towards his subjects.
