Joan Sutherland is by far Australia's most successful opera singer, hailed by many as this century's greatest Soprano. Moving to London in 1950 to pursue her opera career, she was to meet her future husband Australian pianist Richard Bonynge who would become her mentor and greatest supporter. Her international reputation was cemented after her career defining performance in Lucia di Lammermoor in 1959. Returning to Australia in the 1970s to further the state of opera in Australia, Sutherland was made a Commander of the British Empire and named Australian of the Year in 1961.
