Australia has a long history of successful agricultural endeavours, with many of the initial industries of colonial Australia focused on a diverse range of agricultural enterprise ranging from small market gardens of inner Sydney to the grain farms of Orange. Today it is one of the State's leading export markets with agriculture accounting for 16% of the total exports and production valued at over $4.3 billion.

The fishing industry is one of the most important regional industries in New South Wales with sustainable aquaculture leading the field with its fast growth rate and a total production valued at $50 million. As an industry which attempts to address the dwindling natural aquatic food supplies that are available in commercial quantities, aquaculture provides access to some of the most lucrative fishing markets including Oysters and Tiger Prawns.

With many advanced production and research laboratories, New South Wales is at the forefront of agricultural science and innovation with the NSW Department of Primary Industries ranking in the top 1% of agriculture research and science worldwide.
