Located just west of Sydney city, the land that would become the suburb of Eveleigh was initially a rural district with several local market gardens. The suburb would be formed around the necessity to house the workers of the Eveleigh Railway Workshops in the 1880s and grew to become one of the key working class suburbs of Sydney as workers from the brickworks and local factories took up residence in the suburb.
