These stout little monotremes are characterised by the thick sharp spines which protect their body. Living in the hollows of trees and or amongst rocks, these long-nosed creatures use their sticky tongue to catch their preferred diet of termites, grinding food into a paste in their toothless mouth to aid digestion. Echidna colonies are widespread in New South Wales, preferring coastal forests and ranges.
