Whilst AM radio stations began broadcasting in Sydney in the early 1930s, the FM radio band didn't open until 1975. In July 1980 Australia's first commercial FM radio station 3EON - which became Triple M - began broadcasting and ABC Radio's 2JJJ moved from AM to FM in 1981. The newest addition to Sydney's airwaves is Vega which began broadcasting in 2007.

Sydney is home to a number of national, commercial and community radio stations. From quirky youth driven community stations such as FBi Radio and 2ser to the mainstream stations such as TripleM and 2DayFM, there is always something to perk up your ears and make you think. Koori Radio 2LND 93.7 is Sydney's only full-time community-run Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander station which plays Indigenous music from around the world. Some better known Sydney based FM radio personalities include Jackie O of 2DayFM's Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show and Triple M morning show host Wil Anderson. National youth broadcaster Triple J's headquarters are located in Sydney's ABC Ultimo site and a great number of their broadcast personalities including Robbie Buck and Rosie Beaton are locally based.
