Directory of FM radio stations in regional areas

To Culture

Whilst AM radio stations began broadcasting in Sydney in the early 1930s, the FM radio band didn't open until 1975. In July 1980 Australia's first commercial FM radio station 3EON -which became Triple M - began broadcasting and ABC Radio's 2JJJ moved from AM to FM in 1981.

Regional New South Wales is home to a number of commercial and community radio stations. With particular emphasis on community radio and narrowcasting, radio stations in regional centres are primarily concerned with serving the needs of the residents in the local area. This means relevant and localised programming which could include surf reports for coastal centres or snowfall predictions for the Snowy mountains for example.

There are a number of national radio stations who broadcast to regional areas including all ABCFM stations and its youth station Triple J, SBS radio as well as national Christian Broadcasters such as Rhema.
