Directory of AM Radio Stations in Sydney
To CultureAlthough the first telegraph tower would be built in Victoria, Australia's first AM radio broadcast would occur in New South Wales. In 1923 two competing AM radio stations would start broadcasting in Sydney, 2FC in July and 2SB in November and by the end of the 1920s thousands of radio licences had been issued in New South Wales.
When the Australian Broadcasting Authority was given the contract for bringing radio technology to all of Australia in 1932, regional New South Wales would get access to this technology for the first time. Wagga Wagga was the first regional New South Wales town to have a radio receiver built with their local AM station 2WG going to air later that same year.
This new technology with its informative and entertaining programming would be transformative for Australians and began the home entertainment industry which is so important today. Whilst radio plays were the most popular AM radio content in the decade followings its introduction to homes in New South Wales, AM radio today is best known for its talk back programs.
